Director - Advanced Principal Engineer
Ian has over 40 years of experience in water resource engineering and agricultural engineering, particularly in advisory and consulting roles. He has been involved in a wide range of water allocation and water resource management projects at both policy and technical levels.
Ian is widely recognised as an expert in irrigation system design and management, and in particular complex hydraulic analysis involving pipelines, pumps and wells. Ian is very well-known in the irrigation industry and has been widely involved with the design and management of large and small irrigation systems in New Zealand, including acting as a technical advisor to large proposed irrigation developments in Central Otago, and upgrading surface water irrigation schemes in Canterbury. He has also designed and installed large spray irrigation systems in Saudi Arabia and designed upgraded open channel irrigation systems in Argentina.
Ian is an on-farm expert in water supply and demand, crop water requirements, reliability of supply, and how these impact irrigation performance and efficiency. He is also regularly engaged as an expert witness in hearings and Environment Court cases.
Ian was the primary author of the Irrigation New Zealand Code of Practice and Standards for the design of piped irrigation systems, and a contributor to the Code of Practice for Irrigation installation and evaluation.
Ian has a special interest in irrigation efficiency and has been involved in several investigations aimed at improving farmer and industry knowledge in this area. He often presents his findings at field days, conferences and public meetings.
