Modelling water flow in and between groundwater, vadose zone and surface water using one system of equations

Part of the NIWA led, MBIE funded, “Waterscape” programme.

The central question of this research is how to better integrate the surface-water and groundwater views of the resource. Existing approaches loosely couple a surface water flow model with a groundwater flow model.  This approach has been shown to result in mass balance errors or numerical instability.

Our research is developing a new method for tightly coupled surface-groundwater models that are computationally efficient and deliver the information needed by model users.
